WHEN ALBERT EINSTEIN PUBLISHED his general theory of relativity a century ago, even he could not have foreseen how drastically it would change the world. Einstein did not claim to discover a new species of moth nor was he offering a new theory about the cause of the dinosaurs’ extinction; he was proposing a radically different view of reality as it was understood at the time.

Although most of us think of quantum physics as unfathomably abstract, Einstein’s theory actually affects our lives on a daily basis. Without it, the Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation devices that are now nearly ubiquitous on smartphones across the world would not be possible. The incredibly precise information relayed by satellites depends on atom clocks, whose ticks are accurate to 20 nanoseconds, according to research by Richard Gray and Alexandra Genova: “Because the satellites are constantly moving relative to the Earth, effects predicted by Einstein’s theory must be taken into account . . . . The precision of atomic clocks makes the desired accuracy achievable and GPS technology corrects this discrepancy to make the location accurate.”1
